a little ribbony, aprony photo shoot
2010
I promised Abby this apron over a year ago. We saw it on the front cover of a book of aprons, Abby instantly fell in love and sweetly requested her own. There I was, working in a patchwork store, thousands of metres of trim, ribbon and ric-rac at my fingertips. Did I gather supplies and get sewing? Nuh! Next week. Next week. Next week.
Now, what made us remember it last night … aha! Abby was telling us about the Japanese style photo booth she and Sacha visited in Brisbane. She wore her recently acquired “Japanese-school-girl-sailor-blouse” (a.k.a. a cream and red knit sailor top from the 1960s found at a vintage shop in Daylesford) and Sacha wore the funny old apron I bought her at the same store – a yellow and white sweetie with three huge grey kittens printed onto it. I was planning to go thrifting today so asked Abby if she would like me to look out for a funky apron for her. “Well!” she said drolly, “I really don’t need you to BUY me one. All you have to do is MAKE the one you promised me LAST YEAR.” Oh yeah.
So a-thrifting I went – it was gleefully rewarding (I promise not to use the corning ware coffee pot Mum – it has your name on it!) – and on the way home, I called into Spotlight, bought some lime green broadcloth and lots and lots of ribbon, ric-rac and a bit of broiderie anglaise.
Here you are … the ribbony apron. To be worn with jeans … and gumboots apparently.
:: that’s right, lean against the wall, put your feet a bit further forward … yeah, that’s nice ::
:: now, let me get a bit closer ::
:: what! you reckon you’re too cold? you’ll be fine, just a few more ::
:: now try a little curtesy (hee! hee!) ::
:: what do you mean you don’t know how to curtesy! bend your knees! ::
:: oops, now the neighbours are watching ::
:: ah yes, if you jump around and wave your arms, the passing pedestrians will certianly not notice you ::
:: turn around and show me the tie ::
:: okay, all done, you can go back inside ::
:: what! she’s in the guinea pig hut! oi! don’t let the guinea pig pee on it! ::

Abby AND the apron are completely adorable! I recognized the apron immediately so you’ve hit the proverbial nail on the head, no doubt. Better late than after she doesn’t want it anymore. :-)
Utterly delightful post!! ~karen
Abby is a very lucky little lady to have a mum like you. And she has fabulous taste just like her mum as well. Your comments on the photo shoot just cracked me up, thank you for the morning laugh!
I love that apron!
Cracking me up too! Love the photo shoot. You gals are cute. And I love that she’s wearing the apron with those boots!
that apron is fantastic. i’ve been wanting to make one for so long, but it always ends up at the end of my sewing list. i think it needs to move up a couple of notches.
