a very grown up evening
2010
With the girlie away, we ummed and ahhed all week over what we should do on Saturday night. My god. I can’t even remember the last time we did something on a Saturday night that didn’t involve children, families, cooking, and more often than not – being at home!
Rebellion was called for – and we obeyed, being the good parents that we are. At 4pm, we set out for Healesville for a pub supper and evening at the Grind and Groove listening to the blues guitarist Geoff Acheson. OMG! Did you read what I just wrote! We visited a PUB! And went to a CLUB! Where we listened to LIVE MUSIC!
It was AWESOME! And we didn’t get home until 1.30am! The last time I was up at that wee hour of the morning, was probably for a vomitting virus.
Hands down, the best part of the evening was that musician and his guitar. Julian was the photographer (cool huh!) and I spent the evening curled up in a velvet armchair by a roaring, toasty-hot fireplace, listening to truly superb music. Boy oh boy could that guy play the guitar – he is super talented.
I swear there were at least four rich, tantalising, perfectly melded voices coming out of that beautiful instrument at once. It was mesmerising to hear and see, and when he played The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, I thought I would float on up that chimney. If you ever have a chance to see Geoff Acheson live, seize it!
(posing for “the photographer”!)
Oh! And just to remind you what a mumsy I really am, it was so good being out at night, at a club, listening to music WITHOUT cigarette smoke. Go the Australian government! Thanks for making our public spaces so much more breathable :-)

Sounds like a wonderful evening. Just checked – he’s not coming to Qld – boo hoo!! Loved seeing the notice board with the tinpan orange card – they are really worth listening to….
You totally derserve such a wonderful night out. But I have to say when I read this… “The last time I was up at that wee hour of the morning, was probably for a vomitting virus.” I always fell down laughing. Such a mom thing to say, and so true.
How nice that you have smoke free pubs there!
Yea! Oh, it sounds like a GREAT evening!!! Don’t you feel as if you’re going to be caught at any moment and have to go home? I always do even when the child is away in the loving arms of grandparents. Fantastic! The velvet chair and roaring fire — ahhh! Perfect. Our bars and restaurants just went smoke free and I feel like there’s a whole new world of entertainment open to us.
Boy, Lily if you and I lived closer we’d be best friends! Our hobbies and ideas of fun are a good match. We have an evening of acoustic music planned (in a non smoking environment) for next weekend! Should be fun and next time I’m at the book store I’m looking of “Jam”. Today as my girl is away at art camp I’m enjoying the sun sitting and stitching with a cup of tea in our back yard being amused by my chickens! Our summer here in Berkeley has been a bit cold—lots of SF fog. Even with an ocean between us I enjoy our visits :D
