chaos at the castle … and it’s only day 2!
2008

I know it’s only Friday (as opposed to the next castle visit which is scheduled for Monday!) but there’s a quick “Oh bugger!” moment I just need to share before I hit the shops.
Monkton – the castle gardener – was keen to get cracking this morning. I found him early, early, carefully sweeping the sun-warmed brick path that wound through the roses and foxgloves.

He was not to know, however, that the layer of this path is a twit! An earnest twit, but a twit nevertheless. She had carefully measured the finished block from yesterday and it was a lovely 20 1/2. Mmm…. she pondered – my brick path will therefore be 10 squares of 2 for each side with nice topiary trees for the corners.
Aah yes mathematical wonder – but you were putting them ON POINT.
Now lets see how long that finished block is …

… that’s right – 20 1/2. And how long are your paths – 29!!!!! Yes, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 inches too long.
Monkton simply looked up quietly and then returned to his sweeping whilst I plotted a nice golden Cotswold stone wall dividing the holly hedge from the brick path with its roses and foxgloves. Yes that will work – but I’ll need some more fabric. One always needs more fabric!
So I’m off shopping – one of those tedious trips with several stops. Wouldn’t it be nice to have one amazing, little, independent shop that sells t-shirts, butter, organic free range milk, toy stuffing, corduroy and fat quarters.
Oh, btw, I’ve also ordered Marsha McCloskey’s amazing book of borders. Hopefully that will go someway to eliminating such dilemnas in Monkton’s garden. Only someway – don’t forget I’ll still be in charge of the ruler!

Hi Lily,
I love your last sentence — indeed, YOU are still in-charge of the ruler! ;)
WOW–when I miss 2 days of blog reading–I MISS TWO days of some serious happenings. LOVE the mulberry fairy baby…sweet, but not too. And the quilts!!!! WOW WOW WOW…I am so excited to see what becomes of our brick path…Sounds like a mistake meant for the best of us, and such beautiful piecing. I love the colors you are putting together and as soon as can straighten up the sewing area (where has all the sewing time gone??)(oh when will [it] come again??)–I didn’t even say nuch about the “crewel” pillow. WOW WOW WOW!! It is so great…I like the idea of quilting the background and THEN applique!!! PERFECT! OH, I ramble on…Obama, for later then.
OH NO. Where were you last evening when I was instructing a nice customer on this very border??? I was trying to get her to see that her border would be wider than 2″ because the squares are ON POINT. Well, this is a design opportunity. :-)
You have the most incredibly marvelous imagination Lily. You really should write stories you know. I see you writing for the age that first reads – and falls in love with – Secret Garden, Little Women, Anne of Green Gables, etc. I can close my eyes and see this castle world is such detail – just from your posts. What a gift you have!
And thank you – I am honored to be your quilting guru!!!
Hate it when that happens!
