it’s all about the gorgeous fabric
2010
thank you for all the lovely words you shared on my last post.
it is truly lovely to put into words something I find meaningful, and have you listen and enjoy.
I have many lovely tablecloths – some that I’ve made, some that are presents from my family, some that are thrifted and especially lovely ones that were my Nanny Dougall’s – but strangely enough, I’ve never really found my tablecloth groove. I put them on, love them, then we eat, the cloth becomes marked, and before I know it, looks just like the ones at boarding school – a cheeky reminder of what we ate each night that week. Of course, I could wash it everyday, but that is definitely not my cup of tea – I have neither the time, the water, or the hanging space. But I love prettiness on the table, and simply bare wood under our plates leaves me feeling as if we are a wee bit uncouth!
Placemats it is. And new ones were made today – a lovely opportunity to use some of the gorgeous fabric that lolls around the house. That’s what it’s about huh! Gorgeous fabric. Any chance to add some more to our everyday lives is a good thing.
Today, we have birds, paisley, momo, scissors, a pretty polka dot, and a sweet stripe. All patchwork needs some pretty polka dot and sweet stripe. Essential components they are.
Quilted onto scraps of wool blanket. This is a particularly thin blanket – it had many moth holes which made fussy cutting inevitable and is well washed and slightly felted so will sturdily stand up to its adventures with the washing machine.
Ah … our dinner table looks so pretty tonight, that I am happy to just sit and look. And I’ve made eight placemats so that when our friends come – there’ll be enough placemats to go around.
Simon is also happy to sit and look – in earnest anticipation that perhaps one day, something marvellous might happen. :-)

I’m loving your placemats and that you made something for yourself that so delights you! You set a lovely table, no wonder Simon looks upon your accomplishment with envy! ~karen
How I adore those placemats!!
Your table is indeed beautiful, and I ? Simon.
LOL….that was a *heart* for sweet Simon.
:o)
Those placemats are just gorgeous, I get what you mean by seeing what you ate the night before!
Don’t you love how pups are ever hopeful. Something to learn from I suppose. I am always amazed at your gift for putting colors and patterns together. These are lovely!
It looks so loving and warm. What a good job you did on them. And poor Simon – waiting for the scrap that might fall his way. I can only imagine that Toph is on the other side – a matched pair!
beautiful placemats!
I’m afraid if Simon was sat next to me I’d sneak him some scraps, his eyes are too mournful!
What a happy, lovely little table you have set! I love your fabric choices and your pictures are so descriptive…I feel like I could pull up a chair. Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful set of placemats, Lily! I love this picture of Simon… so adorable!!
You´ve made really lovely placemats! I love also my Marimekko tableclothes on the table, but only when celebrating. Thanks for the good idea! Have a nice weekend!
Your way with colors always makes me so happy! What a beautiful table you’ve set!

i have a (new-to-me) sewing machine that i am slowly learning how to use and have been collecting beautiful pillow cases when i go out thrifting.
i’m working tons of hours at the farm this summer but i’m hoping this fall i can settle in to some stitching.
in the meantime, i’ll just keep visiting here and being inspired by all you create!
:-)
