new tricks
2011
Sunday … I spent the whole afternoon at Morris & Sons in the city learning to knit socks. On an 80cm circular needle. I thought this was a mistake when I read it in the list of supplies to bring to class. I was so sure this was a mistake, I rang and checked. Silly me! I am learning to knit two socks at once, toes up on an 80cm circular needle from Glen, the lovely young man knitter who’s been knitting his way ’round Ireland the last couple of years.
Talk about bliss … sitting in a beautiful yarn store with three other lovely women, listening to Glen’s knitting stories, sharing his knitting journal, appreciating his philosophy of knitting, whilst at the other end of the store, a magical woman from Russia taught a class in Orenburg lace knitting. Amazing!
Oh and the cast on technique for the socks – extraordinary! I felt like all I was doing was just clumsily wrapping the wool round the needles, but in fact, I was knitting and now there is no toe seam.
I’m using Noro, they’re for Abby, and I have to get to the heel by Sunday so that I may follow Glen around the heel and up onto the leg. That means I’ll have to knit every night this week … what a pity!

The other things I’ve learnt this week – finding the different pulses in the body … some of them very tricksy. Taking temperatures … very easy. Listening to bowel sounds … very funny. Recording oxygen saturation levels … fascinating technology, but important to remember that the most important tools to use when nursing are our own senses. And measuring blood pressure … really, really good fun. Pump, pump, pump, pump … silence, whoosh, bang! and then smaller and smaller and smaller bangs. I think I’ve got it in the sitting room (nice and quiet) … now we’ll have to go to a nice, noisy supermarket and practice there!

Ooooooooooh! You’ll need to teach me the heel. ::giggle:: I have at least a couple of begun toe-up socks and then I can’t for the life of me get the heel. I can go top down just fine….other way around, simply stymied. Go, Lily! You can take my blood pressure when I’m squealing after you teach me the heel. That will be noisy enough! :-)
Ha , Lily I am very bad at knitting socks … but can hear a blood pressure in a noisy room on a squiggly labouring mother no probs !!
We need to swap skills
What an idea — socks on something other than miniature double-pointeds! That sounds like bliss.
Oh the colour of that wool. I’m hoping Morris & Son have a web site so i can check that out. lucky you Abby.
