2010
My girlie is back home in Brisbane, holidaying with her Nan and friends. The husband’s at work. And I have a new kitchen curtain. It’s been in the works for the last two weeks – two thirds done before our friends arrived, and today, with the help of Miss Marple, the last of the buttons were sewn on, the sides seamed and voila! She’s up.
It’s made from a half metre piece of fabric I bought at Ikea last year, trimmed with one of my favourite stripes for the top and a nice pieced border of florals and polka dots for the bottom.
Don’t you think all those flowers, softly outlined in grey, were just begging for some joyful, buttony centres? Sure they were :-) I sewed them on using an ecru perle thread – long strands so that the back of the fabric is geometrically quilted as I criss-crossed my way back and forth and back and forth.
While the buttons were all over the floor – thanks Toph! – I added some to my new-to-me vintage cardie bought yesterday at the Salvo’s in Ashburton – I love the stitch pattern and Mandarin collar – yum! So buttony pockets …
… a wee trim of ric-rac to brighten the front edge. Very sweet, I think. Looks like me now. And my kitchen. And the sofa cushions. And, you know, the rest of the house.
ha! this last photo looks like I’m about to launch myself at you, bowling you down the back stairs with a big hug! Yeah – that sounds nice huh! Huggy times here at blockaday. :-)

Your cardie and curtain look so great with all those buttons! I was planning yesterday evening something beautiful of buttons. As you know I have a huge button collection, but most of them are quite dark or white. Have a nice weekend! Happy holiday to Abby!
You’re so creative my dear. And here’s a big hug right back at ya. Only I’d knock you down with my huge belly I’m afraid. I am so stinkin’ awkward right about now.
Wow! I just love your curtains and want to make patchwork curtains for a long time too (but for my sewing room as I am not sure the husband would agree in the kitchen).
Oh my gosh, all of those lovely buttons! EVERY. SINGLE. FLOWER! Amazing patience, my dear! And to wonderful effect! Your cardigan is so cheerful too! Those dogs and their power hugs — sometimes they just can’t contain themselves, can they? It’s nice to be overwhelmed with their joy when you’re home alone…well, most of the time it’s nice. :-)
Lily, I’m always in awe of your patience… the curtain is adorable with buttony flowers and your gorgeous patchwork. Very cute cardigan too. The embellishments are sweet!
You are amazing, Lily! I was sure those buttons were part of the fabric. But real buttons – that’s so much better! And the cardigan is lovely too – you have a knack of making everything bright and cheerful, I think! And thanks for the hug ;-)
Cheerful fabric perfect for making smiles appear at the window :) I also like your customizing the sweater–very huggable indeed. I like hitting the thrift shops for skirts and jackets. Then my seam ripper comes out and off come flaps on pockets and belt loops on waistbands for a smoother look.
