fathers-day

Yesterday was Father’s Day so Abby and I devoted our day to the preferred pursuits of Julian.  There was a new Lego building game to play (Abby’s gift for Julian) …

It’s supposed to be over as soon as the first person reaches five points.  The folk at our kitchen table were having too much fun to worry about points (dried navy beans that were stored in egg cups) and thus the game went on for hours.

In fact, as I cooked dinner later that evening, there was a dad back at the table, perfecting his electric drill and double decker bus.  It was interesting to note our different approaches.  Julian went for intricate detail and precision.  And if the piece fitted, it’s colour was utterly irrelevant.

Abby would only build in colours she liked.

And me – well, it looked like a catapult to me!

Of course, an hours long game, with lots and lots of long periods of concentration and building meant there was plenty of time for jam making, chocolate melting and knitting in between.

We played at the kitchen table, in our jammies, until the sun came out.  As soon as those clouds cleared it was time for the Father’s Day picnic – a picnic is Julian’s favourite weekend jaunt.  So off we set to the beach in lovely spring sunshine.  We’d just laid down the picnic quilt, set out the plates, shared out the pies (yummiest organic pork pies from last weekend’s Slow Food market) and coleslaw when bang!  Sharp rain whipped in from the bay, showering us with its icy needles.  The picnic moved to the car and we sat in the grey mist marvelling at how quickly a moment can change and wished for doggies to gobble up our crumbs.

But it was a good day.  Happy Father’s Day dear Bool and thank you for being such a wonderful father this past sad week.
