the red zigzag
2009
I’m a bit in love with quilting onto blankets. It’s such a nifty, time saving, warm-making, thrifty approach to my quilting. I bought a pair of these Laconia blankets on ebay – they’re a lovely rosy and aqua check and so warm and soft. And no quilt to stitch onto them. Thus – the red zigzag.

The blankets arrived at the same time as a gorgeous package of Jane Sassaman fabric – my goodness, how lovely is her Prairie Gothic range.

All those moths …

And even better – spiders!

I chain pieced the blocks, lined them all up on Mum’s bed, sewed them into rows and then … stitched each row onto a blanket, foundation piecing style. Ooooh it was immensely satisfying. I cut, pieced and stitched onto the blanket the whole quilt in one evening. Now I’m quilting the zigzags – with a lovely King Tut thread. Gee, I do like how the King Tut stitches lay beautifully proud upon the fabric. And I’m even quite liking the variegation of colour. I can’t imagine ever stitching in thread that switches from purple to orange to green to pink to blue etc. But this kind of variation is almost my cup of tea. (I used the light green variegated King Tut on my picnic rug and it is *definitely* my cup of tea).

I know I shall love snuggling under this with my little Boot when next winter comes, tea at my side, book in my hand (it will probably still be The Children’s Book – oh my goodness, how fuddled have I become over the years – I read Possession in a week when I was a lazy university student) delighting in the spiders as they wink creepily at me from amongst the red zigzags. Abby thinks we should put it on the guest bed to frighten them, Little Miss Muffet style.
Back to the quilting machine …

Beautiful! Beautiful! So fresh and lively — even with the spiders. :-) I started The Children’s Book last week and had to read the beginning twice just to figure out who was looking at whom. argh!!
How beautiful — I LOVE the reds, my favorite.
I love it! What a clever thing – to piece the fabric on top of a blanket.
And just like that she whips up another quilt! Did I ever tell you that you are amazing? I can’t believe how fast you manage to create a new quilt. And it is a beauty! I love that red combined with the bugs. I was just thinking on my way home that I would get out my gorgeous Prairie Gothic fabric and get started on the autumn bag I have in mind, and I think you have inspired me enough to actually get started ;-)

Gorgeous quilt, not like anything I have seen before. You have certainly given me some new ideas. And that fabric is to die for, will have to try and hunt some down. Congratulations on a wonderful, entertaining blog.
How clever to use a blanket this way! Does it serve as batting and backing at the same time? And I love that fabric too!
I do love the spider fabric!
that is quite lovely…I love the moth arachnid print. and that is a clever idea to quilt onto a blanket.
I adore those prairie gothic prints – I have bought up a fair bit of the checks because I think it is possibly the BEST choice for binding ever!
The blanket idea is genius, I really want to give that a go – blankie one side, quilt the other – does it get any better than that? No. It doesn’t, it’s perfect!
What a great idea! Your new fabric is beautiful as well.
I love this red zig zag quilt/blanket. Red is my favorite color, is it yours? I’ve noticed that you use much red in your work. It’s one of the greatest colors in the world. :)
Holy wonderfulness. It is so beautiful.
I love the idea of quilting onto a blanket. I echo another’s question. Does the blanket act as both batting and backing.
How do you finish the edges and do you have a tutorial explaining this technique further?
