waiting up
2010
I’m waiting up this evening. When we arrived home from work (abby comes to the bookstore most afternoons that I work, and curls up with her homework, drawing pad, pens and … books), I really wanted to go straight to bed ’cause I’ve got a cold. You know, sore throat, wonky head, achy body. Just a cold. But one that would be much improved by going to bed with a nice hot water bottle and new magazine. Instead I finished off the dinner that I mostly cooked this morning.
It would have REALLY nice to then go to bed, but I needed to collect Emma our houseguest (very sweet girl, daughter of CarolAnn’s friend since childhood, back home in Toronto) from the city – she was coming home after two days on Philip Island and the Wilson Promontory. That was a challenge ’cause I know almost nothing about the city. You know, this is a city where you have to turn right from the far left hand lane after the lights have changed to red. And where every big street seems to end in a tollway to a different dimension. And it was dark and raining. Thank the lord for mobile phones. Even those that don’t work super well under the tramlines.
Then it would have been SUPER nice to go to bed, except I’d forgotten to wash Abby’s school blouses and tights. So, on with a load of washing and then a sit down to wait for it to finish so as I could hang up the blouses and tights to dry in the kitchen overnight. We don’t have a dryer – which makes virtuous sense when the sun is shining and I am up to date with the washing. Not so much at 9.30 on a cold and rainy night. Never mind.
So, I had a quick look at my news feeder and there was Tonya talking about baking and I thought yeah! Baking is good. I’ll bake while I wait. And truly, I’m still out of bed, hours after I thought I’d be, but it’s quite lovely. The house is dark and quiet. There’s a hum from the laundry. The whir of the oven fan. The fragrance of cinnamon is filling the kitchen and there’ll be fresh biscuits for Julian when he gets up at an ungodly hour to finish a tender for tomorrow, and Abby when she goes to school.
Hopefully, they’ll be good. I’ve used an unknown recipe from my all time favourite whole foods cookbook – or eating book really. What an absolute gem of information. I read it regularly just to remind myself of all the goodness that is out there awaiting us – and all the processed potholes to avoid. But, in the spirit of reducing our sugar, I halved the rapadura content and added the difference in oats to make up the bulk. Could be seriously odd. Could be great! I don’t know yet. Maybe Simon and Toph will be enjoying them over the weekend. I’ll let you know :-)
Now, the washing machine has beeped – time to hang. The clock has tocked – time to take the biscuits out. It’s finally time for bed. Good night :-)
Update: Well they didn’t just collapse and ooze all over the baking tray as I was worried they might ’cause the dough was so moist. And I only burnt a couple (I think the fan in my oven is actually just a noise machine – it always burns at the back, stupid thing). And they aren’t stuck to the tray. So far, so good.
Update Update: They are YUMMY! They are made with half butter/half full milk yoghurt so are wonderfully light. You can’t even tell they have half the rapadura ’cause they have half a cup of sultanas in them which provide the perfect piquancy. There’s a nice crunch with the roughly chopped pecans but I do declare they need a wee more cinnamon. Huh! This night time baking/waiting up has been well worthwhile. Now I’m really going to bed.

I’m glad I’m not the only one with a cold ;-)
We do have a dryer and I only made chicken soup today, no sweets. Our cold comes with a bit of gastro thrown in for fun though, so we’re not really in the mood for snacking anyway…
I never drove myself in Melbourne but I loved being driven through the city at night, all the twinkly lights, and rain makes it so much more sparkly somehow. Sorry but I really like Melbourne in winter. My favourite bit was driving home one night in the rain with a friend and driving past that big church, St. Paul I think. Not the one right near Flindersstreet station the one a bit outside the city. BEAUTIFUL.
Oh dear — those days when all you want to do is go to bed but can’t are such a challenge. I’m glad everything is done. I can almost smell your baking. I must say, it smells much better than the rancid coconut smell that is stuck in my brain from yesterday’s baking. Feel better, Lily!!
Your baking looks yummy…
Hope you feel better soon.
Yikes! cold + must do list of things is not at all an inviting combination. Hope you feel better soon, Lily.
But the yummy baking smells in the kitchen is such a lovely way to end the long day. These biscuits are making me crave for snacks right now :)
